In the book of Nehemiah, the Israelites were tasked with rebuilding the city walls of Jerusalem. At the same time, they were threatened by enemies to their left and right. The threat was severe but the work had to continue. Even in the worst circumstances, determined to finish the work God called them to, they worked with one hand and kept a weapon in the other hand as protection. The assignment was far from simple, but understanding the duties of the job gave clarity.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average worker currently holds ten different jobs before the age of forty. Typically, most people want to know the job’s description and responsibilities before accepting a position. Unfortunately, there is a position many men accept without really knowing or understanding their role: FATHERHOOD. We know it is a full-time position, but we must read and review our bible in order to truly understand the assignment.
For starters, just like the Israelites, God has given fathers dual responsibility to provide and also to protect from things both physical and spiritual. Of course, we get the idea of working to provide; however, God has called us to leave an inheritance for our children's children. This inheritance we are building should not simply be monetary, but also a foundation of a godly legacy built on purpose, submission, and obedience to Christ. Yet, while building with one hand, we must NEVER take our other hand off of our prized weapon, the Word of God. This is our first line of defense. The enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy and is persistent to devour whomever he can, BUT he is no match for God’s word. By studying our Bible each day we can better learn to provide AND protect as fathers. The task may not be simple, but being equipped goes a long way.
