It was just meant to be your average preseason exhibition game. Please the crowd, run some plays, and shake the rust off. Unfortunately, what the Dallas Cowboy fans experienced instead was heartbreak. Preparing for a season filled with championship expectations, they lose their star player. Not even more than two minutes into the game, Tony Romo injures his back on a play that would ultimately lead to his retirement. The next man was up! Without any warning, a rookie by the name of Dak Prescott was left responsible to lead the team the rest of the way. The fourth round draft pick threw 29 touchdowns, earned Rookie of the Year honors, and led the Cowboys to a conference best, 13-3 record.

One of the greatest indications of great leadership is the preparation for succession. A succession plan is the process of identifying and developing future leaders to eventually replace the current ones. They are mentored and groomed, not only to maintain their predecessor’s success, but to take it to the next level. No matter what, the ball is meant to keep rolling. We see this example all throughout the Bible. Moses trained up Joshua, David trained up Solomon, and Paul trained up Timothy.

Psalms 127:3-5 says children are a gift from the Lord; just like a warrior aims his arrows, we should be guiding our children. They may follow us everywhere we go, but are we committed to transforming them into leaders of tomorrow? Leaders who not only take our place, but surpass us? Although this is not an easy assignment, as fathers, we have a mandate on our lives to prepare and position our children for success. However, If we expect our children to be great, it is only right that we provide them with a great example. The best place to start is with God’s word. Deuteronomy 6:6-9 shows a great example of how God entrusts us to learn His word so that we may train our children to live by it. Regardless of location, time, or situation we should be training our children. Meditating on His word “day and night” is a habit that enables “good” success for the next man up.

How can you prepare and position your children to be a better leader than you?
