The Great Debate
Oh, how I enjoy tuning in to sports radio and watching sports debate shows like First Take and PTI. Each panel member can debate for days on any given topic. Typically, I actively listen and participate from my couch or car to decide whose opinion I can agree with. They will state their case, present the necessary facts and opinions to support their point, and yell at full strength just in case anyone on the fence needs additional convincing. If not for the mediator, the back and forth disputing would never end, which is pretty exhausting once you realize that no one ever wins the debate. The cycle just repeats itself and the loyal listeners come back for more in 24 hours.
You won’t have to travel too far before you discover that it is not just the sports personalities that seem to enjoy the art of debate. We argue and debate for many reasons. Some appear to just like to argue while others may truly disagree. Even throughout the Bible, we see Jesus had to entertain certain levels of debate as well. Right in the middle of His sermons, He encountered hecklers and disputes. Some actually thought they knew better, while others just had intentions to throw Him off of His message. And at these settings as well, people chose their sides.
We are encouraged to always be ready to give an answer when someone asks us about our hope in Jesus. But we should be advised, when it comes to our faith in Christ, there will always be people lined up to debate the facts. If naysayers debated the words of Jesus then we really don't stand a chance! However, when the power of our word falls short we must rely on the power of a godly life to make the difference. Matthew 5:16 says, let your light so shine before men, that they will see your good works, and glorify your Father in Heaven. There is a life available in Christ that shines so bright that words can not debate. May our actions speak louder than our words!
Why is it important for our lifestyle (actions) to match our verbal confessions (words)?
