Put Your Hands In The Air

March 6, 2018

PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR! Unless you’re waving them like you just don’t care, this is probably a phrase you’d rather not hear someone yell at you. While watching a marathon of Law and Order: SVU I noticed a recurring event, scene after scene, where the police would pursue their suspect, there would be an initial power struggle during the fight, and eventually, the suspect would give up. I came to realize that once Ice T got the perp to put their hands up in the air, they were committing themselves to total surrender. The fight was over!

We have been conditioned to consider the idea of surrendering as a bad thing. To no longer be in control is scary when you are use to doing things your own way, your entire life. However, in the Kingdom of God surrender equal freedom. It has been requested that you surrender simply so you may receive your victory. Instead of being a slave to sin, God’s intention is to set you free from it. Not only does He want you free from sin but also from pain, fear, depression, and every other chain Satan has bound you with. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom!

Sometimes, when we have been in pain for so long we begin to guard off anything that resembles a threat or could in anyway harm us. Fear of “what could happen” has become a way of life designed to protect us from even more pain. Ironically, what we have perceived as a threat has been here to help us the whole time. God has been in an intense pursuit of you, desiring to set you free. This freedom comes by way of surrender. It means to die to your own desires and submit to His alone, which is where the power struggle often comes. He doesn’t want to be the co-pilot, He wants complete control. But we do not have to be fearful of his leadership. Jesus said, “come to Me, all who are weary and heavy burdened, and I will give you rest...You shall find rest for your soul. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.” IF WE WANT FREEDOM, WE MUST FIRST SURRENDER!

Can you identify the areas of your life you are refusing or struggling to surrender to God?
