If You've Seen Me, You've Seen the Father
It never fails! Ever since my boys were born (Dylan & Levi), people have had a habit of reminding me just how much they look like me. The resemblance is strong; some have even said undeniable. As they grow older, it appears the similar facial features become even stronger. But it doesn’t stop there. Not only are they stealing my features, but they imitate me and my mannerisms along the way. Sometimes intentionally, sometimes subconsciously. From the phrases I use, to the motions I make, and even games I play, these kids of mine claim them all. But I don’t complain one bit because whenever I see them imitating me, I enjoy it to the fullest.
The truth is, our kids are watching us whether we notice it or not. The good, the bad, and the ugly are all being closely monitored. As parents, we command our children to do what we say, but in reality they will grow to do what they see. The image we give our children matters so we too need a model to imitate. During His earthly ministry, Jesus left us a wonderful example of what imitating a father looks like. The bond they shared was inseparable and intentional, with Jesus understanding our heavenly Father’s complete will and desire. He once told Phillip, “if you’ve seen me, you have seen the Father.” We may be fathers on this earth, but we still have a heavenly Father we are to look to. Just like Jesus reflected the image of our heavenly Father, so can we. As we look to the God our Father and learn His ways, we begin to be transformed into the very same image. We might settle for mocking and imitating other things in this world but it is only when people can see the Father’s reflection in us that we truly become safe for our own children to imitate. May we be able to say, IF YOU’VE SEEN ME, YOU’VE SEEN THE FATHER.
As a father, what steps can you take to make sure you are safe for your children to imitate?
